General information about the Cyclades
Dazzling blue sea... and more! A short overview.

Even
if you haven't been to the Cyclades yourself, surely you will be able to picture
white asymmetrical houses with blue shutters and window-frames, beautiful churches
with round blue roofs, windmills, donkeys walking up mountain trails, dazzling
blue sea... just to mention a few typical characteristics of the Cyclades!
The
Cyclades are a group of more than 30 small islands located in the central Aegean
Sea. They are called the Cyclades because they form a rough circle around
the sacred island of Delos, Greece's ancient spiritual centre and one of today's
most important archaeological sites.
The Cyclades' History began at least
5.000 BC! Approx. two thirds of the islands are
inhabited, the capital being the town Ermoupolis
on Syros Island.
The islands' populations vary between approx. 20.000 (Syros) and 500 (Folegandros) inhabitants:
